Geilweilerhof Tower

Highlight • Monument

The Hofgut Geilweilerhof was formerly owned by the Cistercian monastery Eusserthal. The estate was first mentioned in a document in 1184, since then it was burned down during the Palatinate Peasants' War, came into the possession of the Electoral Palatinate, became a national estate after the French Revolution when the Palatinate belonged to France and was then auctioned off.
After that, the farm frequently changed owners until August Ludowici, a brick manufacturer, bought it in 1895 and expanded it as a model business. This is also where the striking tower came into being, which can be seen from afar and is often used as a photo motif. After his sons died in World War I, Ludowici bequeathed the Geilweilerhof to the district government of the Palatinate in 1925 with the condition that a vine breeding station be set up there.

From this point on, new grape varieties were bred here, one of the first new varieties was Morio Muskat, one of the most well-known varieties from the work of the JKI (Julius Kühn Institute). Later, from the 1970s, more research was carried out into fungus-resistant varieties. The most well-known result of this research is certainly the red wine variety Regent.

The Schipkapass is a very prominent place in the old town of Annweiler. This place on the former city wall is so narrow that you can only pass it with a wheelbarrow Schipka, a bike goes through, but a sign says: "cyclists please descend".
On further way one comes to idyllic houses and water wheels past directly beside the Mühlgraben, a branch of the Queich. Here is also the former tanner quarter.

Leaving Rinnthal on the cycle path towards Wilgartswiesen, you cross the bridge over the Queich. The brick barrel vault is very nice to see.

Hauenstein town centre

Highlight • Settlement

Hauenstein offers a lot to see and plenty of rest and shopping on the bike path Hinterweidenthal-Annweiler.
The Felsentor is very impressive, as in principle the whole Palatinate Forest with the Dahn Rockland. Very good hiking and biking trails abound, what's stopping you to explore the area?

Today I grabbed my bike from the garage without checking or thinking. Helmet over bike jacket over that... All in all, the wrong dress code on my body 😩 I had a hard time this evening. It started with my shoes... (pain subsides)... and then underwear to sunglasses...
On the way I noticed that the Queichtal cycle path is rubbish …
