Mill 't Vliegend Hert

Highlight • Monument

The post windmill of Brielle has a special history. During a restoration of the Brielle ramparts in 1973, two large lumps of stone were found. These turned out to be dice (foundation) of the standard mill that had stood here in the 17th century.

Brielse Gate

Highlight • Monument

Den Briel (also called Brielle) is a small, but old fortified city on the South Holland island of Voorne-Putten. Once a year, the old town center has been turned upside down once a year and people go back in time, dressed up and all. Far back in time Even more than four centuries ... On April 1 is celebrated in Den Briel, that on that date in 1572 the city was conquered from the Spanish occupiers by a small fleet of Watergeuzen. The fleet was led by Admiral Lumey and Commander Bloys van Treslong, names that you still see in the street of Brielle.

To cut a long story short, the gate was rammed, the handful of Spanish soldiers to defend the city were brutally defeated, looted, tortured and murdered, as was (also) common then, and the capture of Den Briel was a fact. Alva had suffered a significant defeat by the loss of the city. Since that time, the well-known rhyme has been: "On April 1, Alva lost his glasses" (in fact: On April 1, Alva lost Den Briel).

The landscape is very varied, you should definitely plan a longer stop in Brielle, a pretty town with canals and on the beach of Rockanje (nice beach stalls with sunset) :)
