Fresque des Wallons

Highlight • Monument

A true open-air book located in the Jardin du Maïeur, the Fresque des Wallons tells the story of a city, a region, a country, through well-known characters (historical, scientific, industrial, sports, artists, athletes, etc.) or anonymously. This monumental trompe-l'oeil is a cultural, touristic but also educational instrument for locals and visitors.

The painting was made in 2004 by CitéCréation (Lyon) and was completely restored in September 2018. The five famous characters who appear in the windows - Blanche de Namur, Dominique Pire, Ernest Solvay, François Bovesse and Georges Simenon - were repainted on canvas in the CitéCréation workshops and replaced the old canvases on the facade of the 'Town Hall ' mounted. . The plant area at the bottom of the glass roof, the stained glass window of Charlemagne, the mountain climber Muriel Sarkany, the Marsupilami, Smurfette, the Walloon rooster and the flying witch Macrâle have also been renovated.

At the same time, the city wanted to integrate new characters. For example, the Namur athlete Nafissatou Thiam appeared in a victorious pose at the foot of the fresco. In the windows we see Namur's favorite priest, Abbé Malherbe, appearing wearing a cap, while on the right of the fresco an Amazon by the artist Félix Roulin sits proudly. New names are included on the book spines: Willy Peers, Namur and Mai, Pairi Daiza.

Hôtel Kegeljan-Godin

Highlight • Historical Site

The building was built in 1878 - 1880 by the Kegeljan - Godin couple and served as a manor house for the family. Louise Godin lived in the building from 1917 and sold it to the city of Namur in 1919. City officials then moved in and in 1937 the city built new administrative offices in the garden of the site.

This work, therefore, can be seen in Namur, on the Place d'Armes.
If the Namurois is renowned for being slow by nature. It's not the case, but he enjoys it. Installed on the Place d'Armes since 2000, this work was shaped thanks to the talent of Suzanne Godard. The two friends indulge in their favorite activities: walking around quietly while speaking slowly, very slowly, like the two snails that accompany them, a symbolic animal of the city, for which the little grays have made their reputation. And you, which work caught your attention and where?

La Halle al'Chair

Highlight • Historical Site

Impressive Maasland building of Renaissance architecture, made of red bricks and cut stones, this gigantic rectangular building, three floors high plus attic, and which stands practically with its feet in the water, was in fact the old butcher's shop of the city.

Built in the last quarter of the 16th century by Nuremberg architects Bastien Sion and Conrad, to better control butchery operations and ensure effective health control, the al'chair hall was a major step forward at the time!

The bottom of the building, consisting of numerous arches, served as a butcher's shop. Commercial transactions were carried out on the first floor, while above it the administrative buildings and accounting of the establishment were located.
After a renovation of the entire building in 2022, it now houses the Namur Tourist Office in this strategic location at the foot of the Citadel.

Surrealist image in Namur: a flying turtle in the clouds. A sculpture by Jan Fabre weighing more than six tons, mounted on the citadel using a huge crane. Several other works by the artist are already installed in the Walloon capital as part of the "Facing Time" exhibition which brings together the worlds of the two Belgian artists Félicien Rops and Jan Fabre.
