Diversion Canal

Highlight • River

This is the northernmost section of the diversion canal, which is otherwise located mainly west of the city.

"The diversion canal or bypass canal of the Nete was dug in 1860 west of Lier. The diversion canal is bordered by a wooded embankment or a row of trees and the towpath."

Market Square, Lier

Highlight • Historical Site

Do you have some time and fancy some history? Then be sure to take a look at the old town ("Oud stad") with its beguinage and belfry, which UNESCO included in the list of world cultural heritage in 1998 and 99. Right next to the bell tower: the town hall. It dates from 1740 and replaces the cloth hall at that time.

Our tip: One of the local specialties is "Lierer Vlaaike", a hearty pastry made from rock candy syrup and four herbs. It's been around for more than 300 years (don't worry, it's always freshly baked) and is one of the oldest regional pastries from the province of Antwerp.
In 1999 an order was even founded, the "Orde van het Liers Vlaaike", which watches over the quality of the product.

Lier Town Hall and Belfry

Highlight • Historical Site

The belfry was completed in two phases as a slender Gothic tower. A first phase started in 1369 and resulted in a modest square tower with a wooden cover, covered with slates. The second phase in 1411 involved the partial demolition of the existing tower and its further expansion into its present form.
In 1914 the city was heavily bombed, destroying three-quarters of the buildings around the market. The belfry and town hall were miraculously spared. Since 1971, the belfry tower has had a small automatic carillon with 25 bells, which play a tune every fifteen minutes.

Vleeshuis Lier

Highlight • Historical Site

The former guild house of the butchers (1418) has had other functions: cloth hall, justice of the peace and prison.
The Vleeshuis was renovated several times in different styles. The current facade is a neo-Gothic reconstruction from 1920. The two stone lions used to stand at the town hall. The inscription S.P.Q.L. (Senatus Populusque Lyrensis) stands for 'the Senate and the people of Lier'.

Tony Bergmann Monument

Highlight • Monument

During his short life, the liberal Flamingant Bergmann was an active participant in the Dutch Language Congresses and a member of numerous associations, such as the Willemsfonds. He founded the weekly De Lierenaer. He was a member of and contributor to several literary organizations and magazines. During his studies he remained interested in literature and history. Until 1857 he had several publications. It was not until 1870 that he would take up this thread again. His style is described as realism or poetic realism.
In 1898 a statue was unveiled at the Lierse Stadsvesten, made by Frans Joris and with a tribute branch made by Louis Van Boeckel. The statue is a bust of Anton Bergmann, with two children at the foot: Bertha and Ernest (sometimes incorrectly referred to as Bertha and Tony), main characters from his book "Ernest Staas, lawyer. Sketches and images".
