Via di Quercianella

Highlight (Segment) • Climb

A beautiful, winding road surrounded by greenery with a moderately steep gradient, it connects Sonnino Castle (Romito) to the hill overlooking the famous Sanctuary of Montenero (Castellaccio). In the second section of the climb, on the so-called Nuvolari curve, there is a plaque dedicated to the famous Mantua driver, who won the Coppa Ciano race on this circuit five times in the 1930s, driving an Alfa Romeo and (once) a Maserati.

The monument, commonly called "Monumento a Ciano", was precisely named after Edda Mussolini, daughter of the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini and daughter-in-law of Costanzo Ciano, a bigshot of Fascism whose son Galeazzo she had married. But the imposing work that was to be a mausoleum intended to house the remains of Costanzo Ciano and his family, as well as a museum with his trophies, was not completed due to the fall of Fascism.

How to reach the Sanctuary of Montenero (Livorno)
The sanctuary can be reached from many places by road bike (with a good range of generous gears!):
1) from the location "il Romito" (south of Livorno) on the via Aurelia SS.1, by via di Quercianella - Castellaccio - via della Porcigliana (or via del Poggio) - via Byron: route of 7.5 km with a fairly long and demanding climb (200 m. of difference in height in the first 4 km)
2) from the city (Antignano district), by via Mondolfi - via del Tirreno: moderate slope, 5 km regular and shady route, pleasant in summer, fun to run downhill.
3) from the city ( Ardenza district), by via di Montenero - Montenero Basso - via della Salita di M .; 3 km route suitable for a mountain bike or an excursion on foot: after an initial slight slope, from Montenero Basso onwards, the road rears up with a constant climb of 10% or more for about 1 km. But it is possible to take the funicular cab that from Montenero Basso leads to the Sanctuary in a few minutes; the ticket is the same as for a normal ride on a city bus.
4) alternative to the previous route, but more suitable for a cyclist,: before reaching Montenero Basso, at the height of the cemetery, go up to the left along via del Castellaccio and then via della Querceta, coming out in via della Salita: demanding route of 3.5 km (with a hard climb at the beginning and a difference in altitude of 100 m.
