Even if Chiavenna is not far from Switzerland, it is Italian through and through here. Thanks to the basin location of the Lombard city, tropical fruits such as figs, persimmons and oranges thrive here wonderfully. Life on the street and the delicacies in the small shops in the old town are also typically Italian. My tip: plan a few more days, explore the city with a guide (tourist office Val Chiavenna) and eat lavishly in the evening. Shops are only closed here on Mondays!

The Valchiavenna cycle path is a fascinating 40 km route that goes from Colico to the Swiss border (Val Bregaglia), passing through suggestive places such as Chiavenna, Piuro with its archaeological excavations, the Acquafraggia waterfalls and the Palazzo Vertemate Franchi. The route reflects the fusion of two cultures, offering a Central European atmosphere. In 2022, the Valchiavenna Cycle Path won 3rd prize at the Italian Green Road Awards.

The Mera stream (born at almost 3000 meters in Switzerland) creeps between the houses of Chiavenna creating an evocative urban landscape.

Historic center of Chiavenna

Highlight • Historical Site

Ancient facades with paintings of great charm and significant importance, fountains and portals in soapstone, decorated with floral and geometric motifs, are the elements that characterize the fascinating historic center of Chiavenna.

There are numerous loggias that overlook the Mera river and the architectural preciousness to be discovered wandering through the streets of the village; hidden courtyards and gardens such as the Córt di àsen represent characteristic corners that have remained intact over time.

An historic centre, dating back to the 16th century, already surrounded by Sforza walls, still partly visible, which bears witness to how rich and important Chiavenna was at the time of great trade with central Europe.

The whole place is a dream. Definitely go there, it's worth it not just for a short detour. Numerous places with locations to stop off. Also a few shopping possibilities. The Castell in front of a spectacular rocky backdrop. The rock formed by ice and water is also a special picture for geologists, as is the course of the Mera river between the houses. In my opinion, highly recommended!
