Sigmundskron Castle (also Firmian, Italian Castel Firmiano)
Southwest of Bozen, above the small village of Frangarto in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle towers on a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name "Formigar" comes from the Latin "formicaria". It is one of the oldest known names of a castle in South Tyrol. The building was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD, later the name was changed to "Firmian". The Italian name of Sigmundskron is still Firmiano.
Owned by the Bishop of Trent since 1027, the complex passed to Sigmund "the Rich in Coins", the sovereign of Tyrol, in 1473. It was only at this time that the castle received its current name "Schloss Sigmundskron". The castle also owes its name to its shape, as the broad complex is reminiscent of a crown (Sigmund's crown). The castle is also a political symbol for many South Tyroleans, as it was here in 1957 that the "Los von Trento" took place, a large popular rally under Silvius Magnago to demand independent autonomy and to protest against non-compliance with the Paris Agreement.

The cycle path runs along the river dam from Bolzano along the Adige into the South Tyrolean lowlands to Salurn and further to Trento.

Adige Cycle Path near Grumo

Highlight • Cycleway

The Adige Cycle Path near Grumo is a particularly scenic and excellently maintained section of this popular cycling route. The panorama is impressive: the Dolomites rise majestically in the background, while you cycle along the smooth, flat asphalt path. The contrast between untouched nature, modern infrastructure such as the railway bridge, and the gently rolling course of the Adige River is particularly striking. It's an ideal place for a short break to breathe deeply, enjoy the scenery, and take in the harmonious interplay of technology and nature.

August 20, 2024,Von Bozen über das Valsugana nach Verona - Tag 1 - Von Bozen nach Caldonazzo
For all three days of the tour, it was always too hot for me at the end of the day with 30+ Celsius. The whole tour, apart from a few short stretches, was very scenic, mostly on good cycle paths, unproblematic roads or, as at the end, occasionally on bumpy dirt roads. Only very rarely did I see a lot …

In blue weather with temperatures of 12C (before Trento in the valley shadow) and up to 18C in the sun, I had a really nice ride along the blue-green Etsch. Valley walls that shine in the sun, drying brown-yellow leaves on vines and the last late apples.
The tour was actually supposed to go to Rovereto, but the train to …

In the milky blue weather, unfortunately quite hazy, with pleasant temperatures (13°C to 15°C), today was my first awakening after my winter sleep.

In the winter of 2023/24, I drove from Bolzano to Rovereto twice in very blue weather and very clear air. That's when I noticed that the Adige Valley looked most beautiful behind me. The walls of the …

Started again today with light rain. The good thing was that the rain stopped relatively quickly at 16 degrees. In the last third it came back stronger, 😮‍💨 the rain didn't stop until we reached our accommodation and then there was the climb and that was at 17 degrees.😤☹️ Some of the cycle paths were closed due to flooding. So …

This time the weather was better than at the end of February. The air was crystal clear. In blue weather with temperatures in the sun between 13C and 19C, it was another lovely little tour along the Etsch. I only needed my warm clothes in Munich on the way to Zug. It was still -2C there in the morning. It …

You ride along the Adige cycle path, very well maintained and signposted even in the event of interruptions, as happened to me. It runs almost entirely on a dedicated path and away from traffic, at least in the Bolzano-Trento section. Numerous rest areas but I have never seen a water fountain. The only refreshment point I found along the route …

It's great that from October to April you almost never have trouble booking bike parking spaces. In good weather, you can usually find spots to and from Munich even shortly before your trip (though for the end of May and the entire summer, it's already nearly impossible).

The ride through the Adige Valley was, as always, beautiful, except for the headwind. The orchards and vineyards were lush green, the beautiful valley walls always in view. ... That's why I like to come here often. This time, however, I skipped the old town of Trento. The climb from the old town towards Valsugana quickly becomes quite steep. From …
