Basilica and Sanctuary of Santa Maria de Finibus Terrae

Highlight • Religious Site

The name Santa Maria di Leuca derives from the Greek "leukós" or white, this perhaps due to the color of the rocks, or for the houses painted with lime, or for the fact that, arriving from Greece with the sun of dawn behind shoreline was illuminated with a clear light. Although there is no certain information on the origins of this town, some archaeological finds confirm the presence of settlements dating back to the Bronze Age. Even Santa Maria di Leuca, like other places on the Salento coast, has been indicated as the place where Aeneas landed fleeing from Troy while, according to Christian tradition, it was precisely here that the apostle Peter arrived from Palestine during his journey to Rome. The territory of Santa Maria di Leuca includes Punta Meliso which conventionally separates the Adriatic Sea from the Ionian Sea.

Built in 1864 and first illuminated two years later, this lighthouse has a hexagonal shape at the base and is 47 meters high. The light, operated by the Navy, has a diameter of three meters and emits three beams of white light every fifteen seconds, visible up to 24 nautical miles.

A place, the most leaning towards the meeting of two seas ... thus, it seems like stitching up two fabrics that together form the sea, a fundamental element for us Salento together with the sun of course 😅

Torre dell'Omomorto

Highlight • Monument

Posted in Salento Fortifications collection komoot.it/collection/1396951/-salento-fortificazioni - The name "Dead Man" is due to some human bones found in an existing cave near the tower. It was abandoned in 1846 [source: it.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torre_dell%27Omomorto]

Punta Ristola

Highlight • Viewpoint

The panorama from here is truly breathtaking, on one side it opens up to the Ionian towards Calabria on the other you look at the bay of Santa Maria di Leuca, the imposing lighthouse and the Adriatic Sea. It is said that this is where the two seas meet. The rocks of this promontory hide two secrets: an imposing natural cave, called Grotta del Diavolo, and an underground bunker or casemate with a very special charm.

Punta Ristola and Punta Meliso are the two headlands that embrace the bay of Santa Maria di Leuca. They are the symbolic places of the Cape of Leuca.

Posted in Salento Fortifications collection komoot.it/collection/1396951/-salento-fortificazioni - The church of San Giovanni erected in the 10th century is made of slabs from the ancient Vereto. Mausoleum "Cento Pietre" (it seems to have always been waiting for us) of the ninth century, originally made up of one hundred megaliths (now they are 99 if you have the patience to count them), the sepulchral mausoleum was erected in memory of the General baron Geminiano, messenger of peace slaughtered by the Saracens just before the battle of Campo Rè in Vereto

Castle of Patù

Highlight • Castle

Posted in the Salento Fortifications collection komoot.it/collection/1396951/-salento-fortificazioni - The now disappeared Castello di Patù was located in the historic center of the town and dates back to the first half of the 15th century, therefore period of the transition from the Angevin to the Aragonese domination. The structure originally consisted of four curtains that joined as many corner towers, with a central parade ground. The whole was surrounded by a moat which over the years has been partly filled and partly transformed into a garden [source: lavocedimaruggio.it/wp/fortezze-e-castelli-di-puglia-il-distrutto- patu-castle.html]
