Clos de Vougeot Castle

Highlight • Castle

The Château du Clos de Vougeot or Château du Clos Vougeot is a 12th and 16th century castle, in the Cistercian and Renaissance art style, in the vineyards of Burgundy, in the middle of the prestigious Clos-Vougeot in Vougeot, on the Grands Crus road linking Dijon and Beaune in Vougeot (Côte-d'Or, Burgundy-Franche-Comté). The castle has been listed as a historical monument since 1949, and is open to visitors for its wine museum. Classified as a Remarkable Site of Taste, it is a Burgundian mecca for events, and for the promotion of traditional Burgundian gastronomy and Burgundy wines by the brotherhood of the Knights of Tastevin. In 2006, the Climats of Burgundy were included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Route des Grands Crus Cycle Path

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The Route des Grands Crus (roughly, "road of the great wines") is the name of a French tourist route situated in Burgundy. The approximately 60-kilometre route runs along the foot of the Côte d'Or escarpment, from Dijon in the north to Santenay in the south. Thus it passes through many of the great appellations of Burgundy wine, hence the name of the route. It takes the visitor through the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune and the back hills (Hautes-Côtes) behind and above the wine slopes. It is punctuated by 33 villages or little towns, including Beaune, many of which have picturesque churches. For route details see: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_des_Grands_Crus

Route Through the Vineyards

Highlight • Trail

It is always pleasant to ride among the vineyards. And on small, quiet roads like this one, the pleasure is always greater.

The Canal du Centre was built between 1783 and 1793 to ensure communication between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. The greenway that runs alongside the canal is part of EuroVelo 6 and skirts southern Burgundy between the Saône and the Loire.

This segment offers beautiful panoramas of the Santenay vineyards.

At the gates of Chagny, the Canal du Center is an ideal place for walks away from road traffic. The setting is superb and shady.

Canal du Centre at Chagny

Highlight • River

Excellent paved flat bike trail along the historic 1793 Canal du Centre, connecting at Chalon-sur-Saône the transeuropean EuroVelo 6 route (coming from the Black Sea) with the ViaRhôna route and leads via Digoin to the Loire Valley trails and Nantes with its intersection of EuroVelo 1 Vélodyssée along the Atlantic coast.
The canal now only serves for recreational boating.

Day one of our Brompton getaway between Dijon and Lyon. We travel from Dijon to Chalon-sur-Saône, playing hide-and-seek in the light showers and drizzle, before arriving in the sunshine along the Canal du Centre.
