Saint-Mélar Church of Lanmeur

Highlight • Religious Site

The church is dedicated to Saint Mélar, according to legend legitimate heir to the Cornish throne, murdered and robbed by his uncle Rivod.

In the last quarter of the 10th century, Juhel Beranger, count of Rennes, held his court in Lanmeur (Lanmurmeler), presence attested by a charter. We can consider that it finances the construction of the crypt and the original church, prestigious patronage in the face of the rise of the rival Cornish dynasty.

Evidence confirms that the church kept Romanesque parts until its destruction in 1902, perhaps part of the nave and the western apse, but a photograph from the time of J. Marzin shows a flat chevet, without apse.

The Romanesque church, which has been overhauled many times, was replaced in 1904 by a neo-Romanesque building with a Latin cross designed by the architect Ernest. The reconstruction preserved the Romanesque crypt under the choir (10th century) and the southern portal of the 12th-13th century reused in the new building6. Its curious pentagonal door is part of a semicircular arch falling on transoms and carved capitals. An old photograph shows it in its original location, a little off center at the bottom of a porch.

The building was classified as a historic monument in 18621.

Morlaix

Highlight • Other

The walker who goes to Morlaix first notices its impressive viaduct. This stone structure spans the deep valley at the bottom of which lies the estuary of the Morlaix river.

Ideally located on the customs path, the active town has many shops. Behind its buildings made of stones and half-timbered wood, the choice of accommodation is wide. From camping on the edge of town to large hotels located in its heart, the offer is accessible to all wallets. Every Saturday, a food market is organized by local producers. A railway station is served daily by the Brest-Rennes axis.
