Saint-Hilarion Church of Duravel

Highlight • Religious Site

The origin of the church dates back to 1055. Built at the end of the 11th century, the building was damaged on several occasions, notably in 1369 during the siege of Duravel, then during the Wars of Religion. At that time, the vault of the nave as well as the northern apsidiole were demolished then rebuilt in the style of the end of the 15th century. The intact parts dating back to the origin are: the crypt, the apse, the transept, the first floor of the bell tower and the south apsidiole. The capitals are decorated in a naive way, with foliage or symbolic figures. In the south apsidiole are scenes representing the tortures of hell and those of purgatory. Others depict the happiness of the elect and the joys of paradise. In the apse are representations of biblical characters and religious scenes. The first floor of the bell tower, which rises above the crossing of the transept, is pierced on each side by a series of four arcades whose semicircular arches fall on small columns with carved capitals. In 1898, the nave was raised to free it entirely from the aisles. This elevation was then carried out in the choir and the transept.

The first known mention of the church of Pescadoires appears with the donation which is made in 1037 by Calsan de Bélaye, his son Guillaume and his nephew Grimoald to the abbey of Moissac; another charter mentions the obit of Hugues, the first builder of the priory of Pescadoires. In 1270, Abbot Bertrand de Montaigu cedes the priory and the church to the Bishop of Cahors, which is then at the episcopal collation.

The Saint Hilaire church in Grézels is a Romanesque church located in the village of Grézels, in the Lot department in France. This church dates from the 12th century and is considered a jewel of Romanesque architecture in the region.

The Saint Hilaire church has typical Romanesque architecture with a single nave, a semi-circular chevet and a bell tower-porch surmounted by an arrow. The portal is richly decorated with relief carvings depicting biblical figures and fantastic animals.

The interior of the church is also richly decorated, with 15th century frescoes depicting the life of Saint Hilaire, as well as sculptures and wall paintings from different periods.

The Church of Saint Hilaire in Grézels is an outstanding example of Romanesque art in France and an important place of worship for the inhabitants of the region. It is open to the public and visitors can learn about the Romanesque architecture and religious history of the region.
