Belle Époque Houses of Mers-les-Bains

Highlight • Historical Site

The seaside district: after the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which connects Mers-Les-Bains to Paris, exclusive tourism from Paris is booming. It was very fashionable at the time to take sea baths. Along the coast, the new seaside district displays all the characteristics of the Belle Époque. Wealthy Parisians and other aristocrats built their second homes there, generally in an Art Nouveau style characterized by metal, wood, or iron balconies and bay windows with rounded shapes, colorful facades, and exuberant ornamentation. The Franco-Dutch architect Eduard Johan Niermans (1859-1928), (born in Enschede, became a French national in 1895), designed several houses in the district between 1899 and 1907. The district still has about 300 villas from that era and was largely designated a remarkable heritage site in 1986. In late July and early August, the Bathers' Festival is celebrated there, with hundreds of people dressed in the fashion of the Belle Époque.

The Saint-Martin de Mers-les-Bains church, a Roman-Byzantine style church built in 1928 by the architect Edmond Douillet. It retains a 17th century altarpiece attributed to Michel Anguier and stained glass windows by Georges Tembouret and Georges Sagot.

At Mers-les-Bains there is a large statue of the Virgin Mary, which has been watching over the town and its inhabitants since 1878 (although not continuously at the exact same location today). After the Second World War, the statue was erected on this spot in 1955 on a former bunker. "A work of peace defeats a work of war" was the motto at the time.
The base of the statue of Mary is decorated with three images of saints, these are the patron saints of the surrounding towns:
+ Saint Martin for Mers-Les-Bains
+ Saint James for Le Treport
+ Saint Lawrence (of Dublin) for Eu.

Château d'Eu

Highlight • Castle

This former royal residence hosted the kings and queens of France and England. It was built in the 16th century by Henri de Lorraine, third Duke of Guise, and renovated in the 17th century by Grande Mademoiselle, cousin of Louis XIV. It became the property of Louis-Philippe, last king of France, who hosted Queen Victoria there twice. You can run around the castle from the station, and visit the museum there.
