Sweeping views south and east, all the way to SF, and Mt Tam right above behind you to the north. The bench is dedicated to the family who built their house in front of you 60 years ago.

Uphill from this intersection a portion of the Railroad Grade has been taken over by Fern Canyon Rd after the Mt Tam railroad closed. A short distance uphill on pavement brings you to the end of Fern Cyn. A bit before the end the Railroad Grade gravel forest road splits off again to the right. The Temalpa Trail that joins here is steep with stairs, not open to biking.

Gravity Car Fire Rd Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Gravity Car Fire Road is a short section of trail connecting the Mountain Home Trail Head at Panoramic Highway with the Old Railroad Grade going up to Mt Tam. While the train was in operation 1896-1930 a branch would go down to Muir Woods National Park. The first portion of that branch is now the Gravity Car Trail. It is very gradual and thus perfect for biking.

Mount Tamalpais State Park

Highlight • Forest

Mount Tamalpais State Park is a majestic area in the heart of Marin County, with sweeping hillsides covered in fantastic redwood forest, open grasslands, sturdy chaparral, and wooded oaklands. The views from Mount Tampais boast breathtaking vistas of the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco Bay and City, the Marin County Hills, Mount Diablo, and the East Bay. You can even see the Farallon Islands, 25 miles out to sea. If you're lucky, you can catch an occasional glimpse of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, nearly 150 miles away. The Park is a haven for cyclists, hikers, wildlife watchers, or those who wish to find a beautiful spot for an afternoon picnic.
