Turtle Back Hill in China Camp State Park

Highlight • Viewpoint

Turtle Back Hill is a small peninsula that is actually more like an island, a unique ecological island that is almost entirely surrounded by the salt marshes along San Pablo Bay. Turtle Back Hill features a microcosm of the ecology of China Camp State Park. All four types of oak trees that can be found in the park are on Turtle Back Hill: coast live oaks, valley oaks, California black oaks, and blue oaks. Interspersed with the oak woodlands are grasslands that have a mixture of both native and non-native species. On the northwest side of the hill is a beautiful field of purple needlegrass (Nassella pulchra), the official state grass of California. And surrounding the hill are the vast salt marshes that so typify the shoreline of San Pablo Bay.

China Camp State Park Village

Highlight • Historical Site

The park pays homage to a 19th-century fishing village of Chinese immigrants who harvested shrimp from the bay. Much of the village has been preserved, and for a couple bucks you can pay to enter and explore the old town and pier.

McNears Beach County Park

Highlight • Beach

Set in a beautiful sheltered cove with mature landscaping, this 55 acre regional park is located along the shores of San Pablo Bay in San Rafael, southeast of China Camp State Park. The fishing pier is extremely popular—anglers fish for sturgeon, stripped bass, shark, perch, bat ray, halibut, and crab. Facilities include a swimming pool, snack bar, sand volleyball courts, several group picnic areas of varying size, expansive turf areas, and newly renovated tennis courts. The narrow, bayside beach offers a fun, safe place for general beach recreation and easy carry-in boat access for kayaks and canoes.
For cars there's only one entrance from San Pedro Rd; contrary to the sign in the park, bikers/hikers can also exit via a narrow trail leading to the China Camp State Park entrance sign, see komoot.de/tour/14120943
Free for bikes/pedestrians, there's a $10 per vehicle parking fee at McNear's Beach ($5 Monday–Thursday), the swimming pool is $5 per person, open from Memorial Day through Labor Day (May–Sept). marincountyparks.org/depts/pk/divisions/parks/mcnears-beach
