The Warden’s Way is a 14 mile (22.5 km) linking trail between the Oxfordshire Way in Burton-on-the-Water and the Cotswold Way National Trail in Winchcombe. It was determined that the Warden’s Way would visit the villages of Lower and Upper Slaughter, Naunton, and Guiting Power, while its sister route, the Windrush Way, just to the south, would literally mirror the same start-end point but avoid settlements of any kind.

The Old Mill, Lower Slaughter

This gorgeous mill sits on a site dating back to at least 1086, when the Domesday Book was written. Sitting on the River Eye, just before it flows into Bourton-on-the-Water, the mill itself has its history in the 14 century.

Like the village it lies in, Lower Slaughter, the mill is absolutely stunning and is now home to a museum. You'll also find a shop and lovely riverside cafe here.

Want to get a good feel for the Cotswolds? Especially if, like us, you're only passing through for two days, this is the perfect walk. It combines Bourton and the Slaughters in one walk. A wonderful walk 🥾
For those who enjoy it, you can visit the Hawkstone Brewery at the end for locally brewed beer and cider. Highly recommended!

A very nice, relaxing and varied tour. Every few hundred meters the environment changes, from village to waterfront path, to open pasture, back to village, to a forest path, etc. Great. The change between culture and nature is also great. Here and there good hiking shoes are an advantage, at least in spring.
There are restaurants in Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter …

A wonderful walk through some very pretty Cotswold countryside and villages. First half is predominantly woods and fields with beautiful blossom and trees. Then 2nd half starts to go through beautiful little villages. Upper and Lower Slaughter both are picturesque, with a decent pub in the latter.
Start early else Burton gets very busy.

Hike from the beautiful village Bourton-on-the-Water following the Windrush Way (although we took a slight division at the start due to flooding) up to Naunton and back following the Warden Way
