Pontón de la Oliva Dam and Cliffside Pathways

Highlight • Monument

The Pontón de la Oliva dam, built during the reign of Isabel II, is the oldest dam in Madrid. It is built in limestone, the rock that we find in the surroundings.
Since the mid-eighteenth century there was already the idea of supplying water to the court from some of the mighty rivers of the Sierra de Madrid, such as the Lozoya. It is in the middle of the 19th century, when the olive pontoon was selected as the most suitable place to build the first dam in Madrid.

Pontón de la Oliva Dam

Highlight • Monument

Built under the reign of Isabel II, it is the oldest dam in Madrid, being the last on the course of the Lozoya River. This dam, 27 meters high, made of limestone, was inaugurated in 1856 as the beginning of the water supply project for Madrid, the new capital of the kingdom of Spain, which was growing considerably in population. Currently disused due to permeability problems caused by the poor choice of its location, today it belongs to the historical heritage of the Sierra de Ayllón, being a place visited by climbing enthusiasts and traveled by hikers and cyclists.

The La Parra dam was built with the purpose of relieving the Navarejos dam, which is located downstream of the Lozoya River. Due to more recent works, today the dam is in disuse but forms part of the well-known La Parra Dam - Pontón de la Oliva route.
