Wedelse Mill (Pelt)

Highlight • Monument

According to some sources, the history of the Wedeler Mühle goes back to the 8th century, which could make it the oldest watermill in the Benelux. However, there are no archaeological finds that would confirm this. Even if the history is ancient, the mill is ultra-modern and contemporary: In 1980, the wooden mill wheel was replaced by a metal wheel and a generator was installed to generate electricity with the mill wheel.

The former mill building of the Wedelse Molen was made of clay and wood and was replaced by the current building in 1765. Today you will find a restaurant in it.

Former Town Hall, Peer

Highlight • Historical Site

Former town hall, aldermen's bench, clerk's office, cloth hall, covered market, prison and fire engine house.
The building forms a crucial historical link between the triangular Markt, Kerkstraat and Nieuwstraat. In the ancien régime, the cloth hall and covered market were on the open ground floor, the meeting room for the city magistracy and the aldermen's chamber with its registry on the upper floor. The attic was rented out, usually in different parts, for a variety of purposes, usually to dry products such as hops and malt. Between the pillars on the ground floor was an open cobbled space, where the annual proceedings took place and the people gathered for various proclamations, insofar as these did not take place in the church or in the cemetery. The prisoners were locked up in the cellars.
