View of Guigoven Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle, which was already mentioned in the 13th century, was originally a moated castle. The moat around the castle, which was fed by the Mombeek and a neighboring spring, was filled in in the 19th century, except for the current pond. The castle was heavily damaged during the wars in the second half of the 16th century. From the 17th century to the 19th century, the castle was increasingly converted into a castle farm without a military function.
The castle is a U-shaped building. The facade is partly in Maasland Renaissance style. There is a gate tower with constricted needle spire between the living quarters and the stables. The lower part of this gate tower is in limestone and dates from the early 17th century; the rest in brick and is 18th century. There is also a statue built in here, the origin of which is unknown. The house dates from 1619 and is the oldest part of the current castle.

Castle of Rullingen

Highlight • Castle

Rullingen Castle, located in Rullingen near Borgloon, Belgium, dates from the Middle Ages but was probably replaced by a water castle between 1623 and 1638. In the 18th and 19th centuries, adjustments were made in accordance with the housing standards of the time, and an English garden was created. After several owners, the castle became the property of the Province of Limburg in 1978. Until 2013 it functioned as a hotel-restaurant. In 2014, the castle was sold to a project developer.

Katteberg Path

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Katteberg follows the route of an old tramway. A climb not to be underestimated awaits you here.

Historical context: This semi-hardened gravel path follows the route of the former tram line that connected the coal mines of Genk with the industrial area of Liège.
The construction of the tram line began in 1908. To overcome the difference in altitude between the station and the hamlet of Leten, an earthen embankment was built over a distance of 700 meters, cutting straight through the Katteberg. A double arch bridge in masonry was built over the Demer river.
The steam tram was put into operation in 1910 and caused a huge increase in passenger traffic in the region. The tram was definitively taken out of service in August 1948. The tram tracks were removed in 1952. Now, this is a route where recreational users, hikers, and cyclists can cross paths. Each at their own pace, enjoying together.
