Porta Montanara

Highlight • Monument

It was one of the four access gates to the city, when Imola was surrounded by the walls built by the Manfredi lordship. Formerly called 'Pusterla' as it was a secondary gate to the accesses to Bologna and Faenza, it later took the name of Montanara, because it faced the hilly area. The demolitions of the 1900s deprived it of the defensive system that strengthened it, but it is still relatively intact in its square plan crowned on three sides by Ghibelline battlements.

Rocca Sforzesca of Imola

Highlight • Castle

In the center of Imola stands the Rocca Sforzesca: a medieval castle. This is a fine example of fortified architecture from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

Santerno River at Codrignano

Highlight • River

At this point along the Santerno, the cycle path crosses the hamlet of Codrignano, in the municipality of Borgo Tossignano. It is especially known for the Garganello festival, a type of pasta of incredible goodness. The festival always takes place between the end of August and the beginning of September.

The Santerno cycle path goes from the locality of San Prospero, near the Imola exit on the A14, to the locality "La casa sul fiume" in Borgo Tossignano (March 2021; it will be extended from Mordano to Castel del Rio). Fantastic track on easy dirt road, without cars.

In winter, with an impracticable ford, it is better to go through the industrial area, and take the Montanara bridge, pass through the historic center and then take the Lungofiume
