Italian Ossuary and Church of St. Anthony (Kobarid)

Highlight • Historical Site

The twelfth and final battle of the Isonzo (Soca) in 1917 later became known as the "Battle of Karfreit" (today's Kobarid). Thousands of people fell victim to the cruel trench warfare on the Isonzo Front.

The Italian ossuary, with the church of St. Anton (Kostnica s Cerkvijo Sv. Antona) in the center of the complex, was built in memory of the Italians who fell in the region. In 1938 it was inaugurated by Mussolini. Even today the memorial belongs to the administrative area of Italy.

The monument has the shape of an octagon that narrows in three rings towards the top, where the church, which was built in the 17th century, is located.

From the place you can crank up the way of the cross, which is laid out as a wide street, to the memorial. From there you have a wonderful view of Kobarid and the Socatal.

Soča Gorge

Highlight • Gorge

1750 was the old stone Napoleon bridge with only a bridge arch. On the bridge, Napoleon's troops marched towards Predel, hence the name.

In the First World War, this bridge was blown up by the Austrian army, later the Italians built a wooden bridge and then followed by an iron bridge. During the Second World War, the partisans defended the Republic of Kobarid here. In commemoration of these events, two commemorative plaques are erected on the bridge.

The bridge has a long history and is known as the Napoleon Bridge:

"In 1616 the Venetians tore down the old wooden bridge. In 1750 the old stone Napoleon Bridge was built with just one arch. Napoleon's troops marched on the bridge towards Predel, hence the name.

During the First World War, this bridge was blown up by the Austrian army, later the Italians built a wooden bridge and then an iron bridge followed. 🌉 Suspension bridge over the Soča (Brv čez Sočo)

About a kilometer upstream from the Napoleon Bridge, a narrow suspension bridge spans the Soča, connecting the slope below Tonocov grad with the east bank and the path to Slap Kozjak. It is part of the Kobariška zgodovinska pot and is the point where you first really hear the roar of the river after descending through the forest. From the middle of the bridge, you look far up and down the emerald-green river – one of the most beautiful views of the Soča near Kobarid.

📸 Photo spot: photograph from the middle upstream, then gravel banks and mountains are in the picture
🚶 The bridge sways noticeably and is narrow – wait for oncoming hikers in high season
🐕 Dogs that are not afraid of the grid floor walk without problems, otherwise carry them
🥾 From here it is a good 20 minutes on a well-developed path to the ticket booth at Kozjak
🏕️ Right on the east bank is Kamp Lazar with a restaurant – an opportunity to stop before or after the waterfall

This point is confusing. There is only a parking lot here. From here it is about a 15 minute walk to the waterfall.

This extremely photogenic bridge crosses the Soča near Kobarid over a narrow rocky channel. The transition at this point has always been important. Only a few places along the raging river offered the opportunity to build a bridge.

In 1758/1759 the old wooden structure was replaced by a stone arch bridge. At that time there were Napoleonic troops in the region, which is how the building got its famous name.

However, none of the French were involved in the construction. The bridge was blown up during the Isonzo battles in World War I and was only rebuilt after the war.

June 6, 2023,Kobarid - Runde mit Wasserfall und Napoleonbrücke
We started with the ascent to the Italian ossuary (picture 2+4) a memorial for 10,000 buried soldiers who died here in the First World War.

It was planned to walk the round including the Tonocov excavation site. Behind the campsite, the hiking trail up to the right was unfortunately closed (see photo 6).
The suspension bridge stretches 51.5m across the …

This circular tour is beautiful and easily doable even with small children. However, it is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. For asthmatics, it is easily manageable with Nordic walking poles – just plan a little extra time. In Kobarid, you can refresh yourself at the healing spring or enjoy a delicious ice cream. And at Kamp Koren, a delicious …

This circular hike is a must-do in Soča Valley! It’s a fairly short trail with so much beautiful scenery.

After a coffee in a local cafe in Kobarid you commence your hike towards Napoleon Bridge. Continuing on through green meadows which lead to the beautiful Soča River. The turquoise colour of the water is unbelievable!

Beyond the river takes you …
After a pleasant night in the motorhome, which was less hot than we had feared, we set off for Kobarid. Here the Kozjak river flows from the mountains into the Soča and forms 6 waterfalls along its way, of which the 2 lower ones are accessible to pedestrians, a smaller one and a large one at the end of the …

Short walk to see a beautiful waterfall. Attention paying entrance for the last 200 meters.

Showing Translation

The Stari Grad archeological site is not accessible and the visit to the Kozjak waterfall is said to cut our budget unduly. The "Path of Remembrance" along Italian fortifications from 1915-18 is therefore somewhat shorter.
