Kreppendorf Milk House

Highlight • Structure

Milk collection points (locally in southern Germany also Milchhäusl or Milchhäusle) used to be collection points for farmers in a certain area, to which they delivered their milk. From there it was collected and transported to bulk buyers.

Most of the milk collection points were built in the 1930s. Before that, the milk was mostly collected by horse and cart from the individual milk-supplying farms. After the milk collection points were set up, mostly at a central location in the village, the milk was delivered there by the individual farmers. The buildings were used to collect and cool the milk until it was transported onward. The delivery conditions also made the milk collection points a social meeting place in many places.[1]

The importance of milk collection points steadily decreased in the second half of the 20th century as a result of structural change and ever decreasing milk production. Depending on the region, the buildings in Germany and Switzerland became so unprofitable in the 1970s to 1990s that their operation was gradually discontinued.[2]

The remaining buildings, mostly easily recognizable to this day by their typical ramp with stairs, often stood empty after their function as a milk collection point, until they were either demolished or converted. Today they often contain youth clubs, cultural meeting places or small bars.

Former Langenzenn Monastery – Cloister

Highlight • Religious Site

The former monastery was founded in 1409 as Ausgustiner-Chorherren-Stift by the Nuremberg burgraves Johann III and Friedrich VI. With the secularization, the monastery itself dissolved in 1533. Catholic services were still held until the death of the last Probst in the year 1537 in the Annakapelle (today only one panel indicates the place of the chapel).

This was followed by a variety of uses by margravial administrators, as Prussian barracks, school buildings.

As a tenant of the Free State of Bavaria finally moved in the 1950s, the Evang.Luth. Parish with office, parish and Mesnerwohnungen in the rooms of the former monastery. Today, some areas of the former convent rooms as office, youth rooms, community hall, etc. are rented to the parish and other users.

From 1268 to 1801, Langenzenn was the seat of the dean's office, with a brief interruption after the Reformation. Since the Ottonian or Romanesque church did not correspond to the importance of Langenzenn, in 1280 the Burgrave Friedrich III. started building a new church. The burgraves Johann III. and Frederick VI. transformed this church into an Augustinian monastery in 1409. At this time, the pilgrimages to the “Black Mary of Langenzenn” took place, which continued after the Reformation. The monastery itself was dissolved after the introduction of the Reformation in 1533. As an Evangelical-Lutheran town church, the former monastery church is probably one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the district of Fürth. One of its special art treasures is the Annunciation relief by Veit Stoss from 1513.
