View of Monte Penegal

Highlight • Viewpoint

In the countryside of San Michele and Cornaiano, south of Bolzano, you can see the imposing Mount Penegal. It is located in the southern Rhaetian Alps, at an altitude of 1,737 meters, exactly on the border between the provinces of Trento and Bolzano.

High plateau near Mölten

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

The long climb up to here was a tough one: Now the undulating panorama trip over the Tscögglberg would start, but I prefer to turn around and take the Etschradweg back home.

Sigmundskron Castle (also Firmian, Italian Castel Firmiano)
Southwest of Bolzano, above the small village of Frangart in the municipality of Eppan, Sigmundskron Castle stands enthroned on a porphyry rock, one of the largest castle complexes in South Tyrol. The original name "Formigar" comes from the Latin "formicaria." It is one of the oldest known names of a castle in South Tyrol. The building was first mentioned under this name around 945 AD; later, the name was changed to "Firmian." The Italian name for Sigmundskron is still Firmiano today.
Owned by the Bishop of Trento since 1027, the complex passed to Sigmund "the Rich," the Prince of Tyrol, in 1473. It was only then that the castle received its current name, "Sigmundskron Castle." The castle also owes its name to its shape, as the expansive grounds resemble a crown (Sigmund's Crown). The castle is also a political symbol for many South Tyroleans, as the "Los von Trient" (Los of Trient) took place here in 1957, a large popular demonstration led by Silvius Magnago to demand independent autonomy and protest against the non-compliance with the Paris Agreement.

Visible from afar, Sigmundskron Castle sits enthroned on the rock. Today, the historic walls house Reinhold Messner's MMM Firmian, the headquarters of a fascinating museum project. It's well worth a visit!
