The Stone Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The La passerelle de l'Authie, inaugurated in April 2022, is a 52-meter-long pedestrian and cycle structure that facilitates the safe crossing of the Authie river. Connecting the departments of Somme and Pas-de-Calais, it is part of the Eurocyclo project, which aims to enrich the cycling routes of the coast.

Port of La Madelon

Highlight • River

Once flourishing under the protection of Waben Castle, the port of Madelon, with its medieval Berck fishing fleet, evolved into a marina due to the siltation of Authie Bay. Today, it has become a simple pontoon near a parking lot, but the setting remains very pleasant and the site is worth the detour!

A few hundred meters from the Berck lighthouse, the Phoques beach is home to colonies of grey seals and harbour seals. You can observe them at low tide, when the seals come to rest on the fine sandbanks.

Authie Bay

Highlight • Natural

Here gathers a whole colony of seals from the Bay of Authie who come to rest on the sandbank in front of the nautical base. An incredible and magical spectacle, easily accessible by road bike. 2 species live there: harbor seals (smaller) and gray seals (larger, especially the males).
The bay of Authie is an ideal space for these mammals because the sandbank brings them rest, warmth and protection and the sea offers them fish at will. The seals bask on the sandbar in order to recover and then hunt during high tide. Indeed, their favorite activity requires a lot of energy, so it is vital for them to rest and store fat in order to be ready for winter.
Furthermore, studies have shown that seals can sleep at sea with only half of their brains dormant. The left hemisphere is at rest while the right hemisphere remains awake. On the other hand, when they are on dry land, seals sleep like humans, deeper and longer. They therefore need these moments of rest on the coast to fully recover. Reason for which it is necessary to observe them by leaving them alone and especially not to frighten them.
