Grand'Place Samer

Highlight • Other

This market town is famous for its strawberries, which have been cultivated for over a century. There is also an annual Strawberry Festival celebrated throughout the region. The Grand'Place, the rectangular village square, is lined with old houses, mainly from the 18th century. Samer owes its name to H. Wulmaars, a monk who founded a Benedictine abbey here in the 7th century.

Hardelot-Plage

Highlight • Other

At the start of the 1900s, Hardelot was still just a huge warren, mainly attracting hunters.
In 1905, an English patron, Sir John Whitley, already owner of the Château d'Hardelot and promoter of Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, wanted to make Hardelot the new fashionable seaside resort and social center for sports. He buys 400 hectares of land and creates "the company of Hardelot".
In 1911, the illustrious aviator Louis Blériot had a villa built on the dyke. He designed and marketed the first French aeroplage, the ancestor of the sand yacht, which would attract a large number of enthusiasts to the resort's beach.
The interwar period marked the peak of Hardelot, which rivaled Le Touquet Paris-Plage and attracted personalities from all over Europe. Many villas are built, where the big names in champagne, textiles and French gastronomy reside. But disfigured by the numerous destruction of the 2nd World War, the station must then be rebuilt. It has become a classic seaside resort lining up modern buildings on its seafront.
Note that here is judged the arrival of the Lille-Hardelot hiking-cycling race which takes place in May.

Hardelot Castle

Highlight • Castle

This neo-Gothic mansion is located in front of the lake of mirrors. It was built in the 19th century by Sir John Hare, who drew inspiration from Windsor Castle but retained the remains of the 13th century fortification. In 2009 it was restored by the department, furnished and decorated in Victorian and Napoleon III style. Today, visitors are told about the history of the castle and what the Franco-English "accord cordial" is, as well as in a more general way the particular relations between these two countries.

Samer and the Saint-Martin Church

Highlight • Religious Site

The 15th century church, a remnant of the abbey, has an octagonal bell tower and an 11th century Romanesque baptismal font. The structure is remarkable for the buildings that are built against the church, not unusual in the Middle Ages.
