Carmel-by-the-Sea

Highlight • Settlement

This picturesque little town south of 17 Mile Dr is a sight in itself. Beautiful wooden houses, numerous art galleries, and the hometown of several Hollywood stars. Clint Eastwood even served as mayor of this small town of approximately 4,000 residents.

Ghost Trees at Pescadero Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

Pescadero Point is a fantastic spot to view the ghost trees and offers spectacular ocean views, along with fascinating rock formations. This area is known for its legendary big waves, which can reach heights of up to 50 feet (15 meters) in the winter, but it's a stunning sight to see any time of year. There is a manned gate at the entrance of the Pebble Beach Golf Course to access this location for vehicles, however, if you're on a bike you can pass for free.

Pescadero Point 🌊

Highlight • Viewpoint

The famous "Witch Tree" landmark, often used as scenic background in movies and television, was formerly at Pescadero Point. The tree was blown down by a storm on January 14, 1964. The beach walk still leads by two rocks leaning tenderly on each other. Pescadero Point is also the site of the Ghost Tree, a landmark Monterey Cypress tree. The tree gives its name to a dangerous extreme surfing location known to have storm waves. Currently, the surf break of Ghost Tree is off limits to surfers and watercraft.

The beaches along the Monterey peninsula have a very white sand due to the white rocks and sea shells it's made of.

Lone Cypress Tree

Highlight • Natural Monument

Pebble Beach on 17-Mile Drive in Monterey is not only known for the most beautiful/expensive golf courses (de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble_Beach_Golf_Links 🏌🏻‍♀️) but it also hosts the most exclusive car auction every year by classic cars (see also autobild.de/klassik/artikel/pebble-beach-2017-monterey-car-week-10676163.html 🚗)
However, we "only" enjoyed the surf with the rugged rocks, the Pacific and the nature along 17-Mile Beach ☺️
The Lone Cypress is an absolute tourist attraction there and we couldn't escape a certain fascination either 😊 More information at de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/17-Mile_Drive

Description

If you're looking for one of the most scenic Carmel-by-the-Sea touring cycling routes, the Carmel Beach – Fan Shell Beach loop delivers. This moderate 13.4-mile (21.6 km) route, with 619 feet (189 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hour and 21 minutes, offering an immersive coastal experience that's perfect for those who want to truly soak in the famous 17-Mile Drive.

What to expect on Carmel Beach – Fan Shell Beach loop from Carmel-by-the-Sea

This route takes you on a journey through dramatic coastal views and pristine white sand beaches, primarily along the iconic 17-Mile Drive. You'll cycle past famous landmarks like the Lone Cypress Tree, Seal Rock, and Bird Rock, with the route winding through the majestic Del Monte Forest, showcasing ancient Monterey Cypress trees. While the terrain is mostly paved and excellent for touring bikes, expect a mix of rolling hills and some steeper sections, particularly on the south side of the 17-Mile Drive, which can feel more challenging if strong coastal winds are present. This ride is best suited for cyclists with good fitness who appreciate stunning natural beauty alongside glimpses of luxurious mansions and world-class golf courses.

Planning your visit

While vehicles typically pay a fee to enter the 17-Mile Drive, cyclists can often enter for free, making it a more accessible option for two-wheeled exploration. Be aware that traffic can be heavy, especially during peak times, but vehicles generally move slowly due to the scenic nature of the drive. It's wise to check the weather forecast before you go, as coastal winds can be strong and temperatures can change rapidly. If you don't have your own bike, rentals, including e-bikes, are readily available in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
