Marincello Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Marincello Trail climbs from the Tennessee Valley parking/trailhead to the top of the ridge separating it from Rodeo Valley. While climbing out of Tennessee Valley it offers spectacular views of the North Bay to San Rafael, to the West all the way down to the pacific, and to San Francisco and Golden Gate Bridge peeking through the ridgeline to the South. It is named for the road that was constructed in the 1960s by developers hoping to build a massive residential community into the headlands, which was finally defeated in the 1970s when local residents managed to put the entire area under protection.

Description

If you're looking for a classic Marin Headlands mountain biking experience that blends history with stunning views, the Marincello Trail – Rodeo Valley Trail loop from Larkspur delivers. This moderate 27.2-mile (43.9 km) route packs in 2825 feet (861 metres) of climbing, typically taking around 3 hours and 38 minutes, making it a solid day out for riders ready for a sustained effort.

What to expect on Marincello Trail – Rodeo Valley Trail loop from Larkspur

What makes this loop special is the journey through varied terrain and vistas. The Marincello Trail segment starts with a well-maintained, gradual climb on fire roads and gravel, offering expansive views of the North Bay, the Pacific Ocean, and even glimpses of the San Francisco skyline and Golden Gate Bridge as you ascend. You'll encounter rolling hills and open meadows, often shrouded in morning fog that eventually clears to reveal the spectacular landscape. The Rodeo Valley Trail, historically a ranch road, is largely a dirt/gravel road, providing a less technical ride. While the overall loop is moderate, be prepared for a substantial climb on Marincello and some sections that might require advanced riding techniques or even walking your bike, so good fitness is key.

Planning your visit

Starting from Larkspur, this loop is a fantastic way to experience the Marin Headlands. The trails are primarily fire roads and doubletrack, suitable for mountain bikes, e-bikes, and gravel bikes. Remember to adhere to the 15 MPH park speed limit and show courtesy to hikers and equestrians, often slowing to a walking pace when passing. The Marin Headlands are particularly appealing during the summer months due to their characteristically cooler coastal temperatures compared to inland regions, though morning fog is common.
