Description
If you're looking for a jogging route that truly offers the best of both worlds along Florida's Scenic Highway 30A, the Timpoochee Trail – Eastern Lake loop from Rosemary Beach is a fantastic, albeit difficult, choice. This 12.0-mile (19.2 km) route, which you can complete in about 1 hour and 58 minutes with 140 feet (43 metres) of elevation gain, is perfect for runners who want to blend smooth coastal paths with more challenging, natural forest trails, making it a dynamic workout.
What to expect on Timpoochee Trail – Eastern Lake loop from Rosemary Beach
The journey begins on the paved Timpoochee Trail, offering smooth jogging through charming coastal communities and past rare coastal dune lakes like Eastern Lake, with occasional glimpses of the Gulf of Mexico. While this section is generally easy, it can get busy with other users. You'll then transition to the Eastern Lake Trails within Point Washington State Forest, where the terrain shifts dramatically to unpaved surfaces of compact sand, soft sand, and pine duff, potentially muddy after rain. This more immersive natural experience winds through diverse ecosystems like titi swamps and cypress domes, providing welcome shade and a distinctly more difficult challenge for your run.
Planning your visit
To access the Eastern Lake Trails, you'll need to pay a day-use fee. The Timpoochee Trail itself is easily accessible from Rosemary Beach, but be aware that parts of it can be narrow and close to the road. The Eastern Lake Trails offer a more secluded experience, but require more attention to foot placement due to the varied unpaved surfaces. Consider visiting during cooler parts of the day or year, as the shaded forest sections are a relief from the sun, but the paved sections can be exposed.
