Huijbergen

Highlight • Settlement

"Around the year 1000, hardly any people lived here around Huijbergen. It was desolate and empty, a damp wilderness. Perhaps there were some loose people in this region who lived from fishing and primitive agriculture. Sometimes they earned some extra money from highway robbery: it robberies of travelers and strangers."
Henry IV, in a sense the founder of Huijbergen, died in 1268 at the age of eighteen and was succeeded by his sister Elisabeth, who was married to Arnoud van Leuven. This couple, who were known for their generosity towards churches and monasteries, managed to interest the Wilhelmites of the Bazeldonk monastery in 's-Hertogenbosch in the development of the Zuidwesthoek. They donated their possessions in this region to the contemplative order of monks, who founded a monastery there in 1277 and cultivated the wasteland. The monks were also given rights in the areas of taxation, administration and justice. The village of Huijbergen arose around the Wilhelmite monastery. After all, the order needed farmers and workers for its farms.
When the Germans withdrew at the end of the Second World War, important parts of the village center, including the beautiful church and most of the monastery, were destroyed. After the war, the core is restored and 'Ste. Marie' has been rebuilt and expanded to its current size. The educational institute was closed in the 1970s and 1980s, which resulted in many beautiful buildings being demolished. The most important building that has been preserved is the fully restored gatehouse, which now houses the Wilhelmite Museum. The rest of the extensive monastery complex is currently being reused as an apartment building.

Boundary Marker 246

Highlight • Monument

A boundary marker with a story.
Every monument or monumental object tells its own story. This border marker was placed after independence between Belgium and the Netherlands in 1843.
On February 29, 1904, the original boundary marker was lowered deep below the road surface for road safety and to prevent theft during road reconstruction.
Exactly 100 years later, on February 29, 2004, the border marker was made visible again and relocated a short distance from the place where it was previously buried. The accompanying official report was signed by the mayors of Essen, Kalmthout and Woensdrecht.
At that - actual border point - a stainless steel bus can still be seen in the asphalt.
!!! CAREFULLY !!! You will find this point at the intersection Bredestraat - Weg naar Wouw, approximately 15 meters northwest of the new site of Grenspaal 246.

Molen Johanna (Huijbergen)

Highlight • Monument

The building permit granted for the Johanna also mentioned its use as an oil mill and the mill may have been equipped as such. There was also a sawing mill in the Johanna.
During the Second World War the mill was used to grind grain and generate electricity.
In the 1960s the mill fell into disrepair. It was sold to the municipality of Huijbergen in 1966, which immediately had it restored. The mill was made ready for grinding in the years 1968/1969. Nowadays, volunteer millers keep the mill running regularly.
