Cancellino–Lama Forest Trail

Highlight • Trail

Starting point for the Lama Forest.
Once this path with a very slight constant slope of almost 20 km, was the route of an old narrow-gauge railway that was active in the early twentieth century.
The railway was mainly used to transport the timber resulting from the logging of the Forest of the Blade.
In the Lama Forest you will find a variety of trees from beech, fir, maple, elm, ash and wild lime trees.

Cancellino Forest Road

Highlight • Trail

Splendid itinerary in the heart of the forests of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park: the route winds along a dirt road in excellent condition and faithfully follows the route taken by the train that transported wood from the Lama area to Cancellino, a town located on the state road that connects Badia Prataglia to Bagno di Romagna, through the Passo dei Mandrioli. The train was in operation from 1900 to 1914. Given the considerable length of the itinerary, 20 km, we recommend that hikers with considerable resistance do it, while it is ideal for mountain bike and horse trekking enthusiasts. The environment is magnificent: you always proceed among majestic beech trees, interspersed with some fir trees, you come across three fresh springs, as well as two sulphurous water springs. La Lama is a splendid plateau with large trees that stand on a unique marshy environment: this is the true soul of the Casentinesi Forest Park.

Crocina Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The crocina from which the passage takes its name has been there since time immemorial. In August 2020 it had been removed by some vandals; fortunately the carabinieri found it and brought it back to its place.

Miraglia Chestnut Tree

Highlight • Natural Monument

The Miraglia chestnut is a monumental tree located near Camaldoli, within the National Park of the Casentinesi Forests, Monte Falterona and Campigna, so named in honor of Mrs. Elena, wife of the commander Nicola Miraglia, who at the end of the nineteenth century was director General of the Ministry of Agriculture. Its dimensions are impressive since its height exceeds 20 m and the base diameter is over 4.2m. The age is not well identifiable since the analysis of the diameter and height of the plant would establish 500 years, however over a century ago the historical register of the forest attributed the plant about 200 years, so today it would be a total of 300.

The chestnut has a longitudinal opening of about 10 m and 1.5 m deep in the lower part, so large that in the past years it has housed a table (later removed following the construction of the fence). Despite everything, the plant is still alive and manages to carry the nutrients necessary for its sustenance towards the top. (Source: Wikipedia)

Gothic Line Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Magnificent trail. Suitable as an "enduro" type MTB route. For those approaching by bike, we recommend the climb along the German path up to the Gaggi cross and then turn right at the top onto the first path that climbs up to Poggio Muschioso. From here the paths that can be traced back to the Gothic line branch off downhill (enduro!)
Wonderful landscape.

Battilocchio Trail

Highlight • Trail

From the starting point in Battilocchio the route is downhill, medium difficulty, fun. Any car can be parked in the adjacent area (few parking spaces).
