Parco dei Cedri

Highlight • Natural

Park on the border between Bologna and San Lazzaro di Savena. It can be reached by following route 2 of the Bolognese cycle paths.
The Savena river passes next to it and divides the capital from San Lazzaro.
There is a fountain in the northern area of the park.

From the ruins of the church there is a path that is not suitable for MTB unless you want to do cycle mountaineering and carry your bike on your back. My friend and I stopped at the second steep slope in the middle of the trees. With the ebike, going back was really tiring as the steep slope was made of pebbles and practically vertical. See photos.

This pillar was erected by the heirs of a knight who miraculously returned from the crusades, who told the story of his vain youthful love. From this story was born the legend of the Blessed Lucia da Settefonti, or Lucia Chiari, who was a nun and then abbess of a convent that stood on the ridge, shortly after 1100.

Lucia became abbess upon the death of Matilde di Canossa, founder of the convent, but the fame of her beauty reached the surrounding area and the rumor also reached the many garrisons that garrisoned the territory of Uggiano. Among the soldiers there was a noble knight, Diotagora Fava, who was secretly in love with her, having seen her in a church in Bologna, when she had not yet taken her vows.

The handsome knight rode along the path over the gullies every morning to go to the convent church, but without daring to say anything. Lucia had noticed this constant presence and soon found herself fighting the disturbance with assiduous prayers, vigils and penances which soon undermined her health. She fell ill, and then he opened his heart and Lucia did too: she told him that she loved him, but that she was resolute in her dedication to monastic life and invited him never to return. They broke up, with the knight's promise to leave as a crusader for the Holy Land. So he did, while Lucia, undermined by illness, passed away in a saintly way.

The knight was wounded, taken prisoner and locked in a cell where one night, in the throes of fever, he saw Lucia holding out her hand to him and, as if in a dream, he found himself transported to the forest of Settefonti. Having awakened, he walked towards the convent, knelt in front of his beloved's tomb and cried. At that moment the seven sources of crystalline water, which had dried up following Lucia's death, began gushing profusely again.

Via del Pilastrino viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Via del Pilastrino is a historic panoramic dirt road that connects the towns of Ciagnano and Settefonti, within the Gessi Bolognesi and Calanchi del'Abbadessa Regional Park. Along the road, a seventeenth-century pillar restored at the beginning of the century marks the place where the Camaldolese Monastery of S. Cristina was located, where the Blessed Lucia da Settefonti was Abbess.

A little further on there is a lookout with some benches, from which it is possible to admire the barren landscapes of the gullies and enjoy an excellent view of the plain on one side, and of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines on the other. On clear days you can see the profiles of Corno alle Scale and Mount Cimone, the highest peak in the northern Apennines.

Not far from the Idice River, this dirt road offers splendid views of the Mercatale and Botteghino di Zocca ravines. This is a typical landscape of the Bologna Pre-Apennines.

October 21, 2023,Giro gravel
After the flood, I no longer took the path along Idice that starts from Ca' de Mandorli. They did a good job, at times technical, perfect for gravel.
