Covered Bridge (Pavia)

Highlight • Bridge

The Covered Bridge, also known as Ponte Vecchio, crosses the Ticino River and connects the historic center of Pavia with the characteristic Borgo Ticino district, originally located outside the peripheral walls of the city. The neighborhood was traditionally inhabited by washermen, scree workers and fishermen.

The bridge, symbol of Pavia, is particular, with its five arches, entirely covered by a structure, and equipped with two portals at its ends. Also, there is a small chapel in the middle of the bridge.

The current Ponte Coperto was built between 1949 and 1951 and reflects the characteristics of the ancient Ponte Coperto dating back to the 14th century, which in turn had replaced the ancient Roman bridge (whose columns are still visible today).

Piazza Vittoria is the main square of the city, formerly known as "Platea Magna", large square.

Regisole

Highlight • Monument

Mystery and splendor surrounds the majestic equestrian statue in the Piazza del Duomo.

Cathedral of Pavia

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the cathedral begins in August 1487 when the citizens asked for the construction of a new cathedral to replace the medieval buildings.
Cardinal Ascanio Sforza received permission from Pope Innocent VIII in 1488 to demolish the ancient cathedral and supervise the project.
The architecture of the cathedral follows a central plan with arms converging under a large central dome, influenced by structures such as the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence and the studies of Leonardo da Vinci. Donato Bramante initially led the project, while subsequent architects made some changes while maintaining Bramante's original ideas.
The construction of the dome was resolved at the end of the nineteenth century by Carlo Maciachini, who chose a masonry dome with a Greek cross plan.

The Cathedral of Pavia, completed in 1885, has an imposing façade surmounted by a dome and a loggia inside. The interior has a Greek cross structure with four arms divided into three naves. The dome is supported by eight elaborately shaped pillars, while all the other pillars have the same design. The presbytery is illuminated by high windows with frescoes and an image of the Assumption. The completion of the Cathedral involved several construction phases, including the addition of a reinforced concrete transept in the 20th century by several architects and engineers.

Visconti Castle of Pavia

Highlight • Castle

Impossible not to be conquered by the beauty of the Castello Visconteo in Pavia. The stronghold is immersed in a park and represents an imposing medieval fortress in the heart of a city. Despite its grandeur, it is harmonious and luminous. The interior can only be visited in the afternoon, but the courtyard is very beautiful and the museums are interesting.

Basilica of San Michele Maggiore

Highlight • Religious Site

This masterpiece in Lombardy-Romanesque style was built in the 12th century on the remains of an older church, where the coronation of the Lombard kings took place. This tradition continued in the new building and it was here that Frederick Barbarossa was awarded the Iron Crown of the Kingdom of Italy in 1155. The importance of the building explains its façade** of light sandstone (and not the then usual brick), remarkably balanced and varied in its sculpted decoration. On the right is a Romanesque door. On the door lintel, Christ gives Paul a papyrus scroll and Peter the keys to the church.
