San Vigilio Church and Tower (Vigiljoch / Monte San Vigilio)

Highlight • Religious Site

Vigiljoch in the narrower sense refers to a 1743 m s.l.m. high crossing over the northeastern foothills of the Zufrittkamms of the Ortler Alps in South Tyrol (Italy). This is located between smaller, mostly wooded hilltops and is the site of the church of St. Vigil am Joch with frescoes from the 14th century. In a broader sense, Vigiljoch is also used to refer to the surrounding mountain ridge, without distinctive peaks, which rises between the lower Vinschgau, the Burggrafenamt around Meran and the entrance of the Ultental valley, and which, in the south-westerly direction, increases significantly in height to the Naturnser Hochjoch.

Naturnser Alm (Malga Naturno)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

We finally hiked over the Vigiljoch, Lana’s local mountain, to the Naturnser Alm, where we could enjoy a wonderful view of the Vinschgau, the Texel group and the Ötztal Alps with the glaciated summit of the Weißkugel.

A wonderful view over the South Tyrolean mountain landscape is the reward for the long and strenuous ascent from Marlengo to the Vigiljoch. There are different options for the descent: either the same way back via the Naturnser Alm, via Darling in the direction of Meran, or (my favourite) via Aschbach down to the Adige. If you like it sporty, you can use the mountain bike trails in the direction of Lana (keep in the direction of the cable car).

As black as the name sounds, the "black paint" is not, as you can see from the photos. The name is often used in the Alpine region for standing, rather dark-looking waters. Ideal for a small break on the lake shore or in the restaurant by the lake.

Aschbach Cable Car Upper Station

Highlight • Rest Area

If you do not want to reach the trails near Aschbach by bike, you can also go up by mountain railway. From the valley station at the stop of the "Vinschgerbahn" it goes up to pure trail pleasure. As a rule, the train brings visitors to Aschbach every half hour. Information can be found here: aschbach.it
