Through the Schnalstal to Kurzras

Highlight • Trail

The climb up through the Schnalstal begins just before Naturns and first leads through a 2 km long tunnel. Once you have managed this less attractive section, you can look forward to a top-class ascent, because the Schnalstal is definitely worth seeing, picturesque South Tyrolean mountain farms are along the way and Our Lady in Schnals is a pretty mountain village. The road climbs steadily but moderately, mostly with only single-digit percentages and almost flat at the Vernagt reservoir, so you have enough air to enjoy the beautiful mountain landscape.
The paved route ends at Kurzras at 2020m, from here you can either walk or take the cable car up into the high alpine regions.

Vernago Lake

Highlight • Lake

Although the section runs on asphalt, it is still a pleasure on a mountain bike. The reservoir is beautifully situated in the landscape and is also ideal as a very cold bath on hot summer days.

Lake Vernago

Highlight • Lake

Lake at 1,689 meters above sea level which covers almost 100 hectares.
Lake Vernagt (Vernagt Stausee) is an artificial lake, created in the 50s, and is located in Val Senales: not far from Merano.
As often happens, the creation of the artificial lake has submerged a pre-existing village and when the water level is low it is possible to see the bell tower of the old church protruding from the lake.

Vernago al Lago

Highlight • Settlement

Bistro and Pension Leithof directly at the Vernagtsee (1700 m) at the foot of the Similaun.
Well-kept rooms, good food with South Tyrolean specialties.
Nice view from the bistro over the turquoise reservoir.

Lake Vernago

Highlight • Lake

A wonderfully beautiful lake with the beautiful backdrop of forests and partly snow-capped mountains of the Schnalstal. The lake is definitely worth a visit - but keep in mind that the parking lot at the dam (especially on weekends) can be quite crowded. It is therefore worthwhile to leave early.
