Parish Church of St. Peter in Romena

Highlight • Religious Site

The Parish Church of San Pietro a Romena is a jewel of Romanesque architecture nestled like a treasure chest in the verdant Casentino countryside. The building, dedicated to Saint Peter the Apostle, is constructed entirely of stone and is considered one of the most remarkable in the area.

Dating to 1152 and located approximately 3 kilometers from Pratovecchio, the Parish Church of Romena features a simple ashlar stone façade flanked by a quadrangular bell tower that predates the church itself. The interior, with three naves, immediately captivates with its finely decorated capitals atop massive columns: we can admire human and animal figures, Christian symbols, and geometric and plant elements. The asymmetrically placed side windows create an intense play of light and shadow within the church.
During floor restoration, the remains of an ancient building were uncovered, suggesting that the religious complex of Romena was built over a pre-existing three-apse church dating back to the 8th century. The ruins are now visible beneath the presbytery.

The parish church, in addition to being a valuable medieval architectural monument in Casentino, has become a popular destination over the years, thanks in part to the religious and meditative spirit evoked by the place where the Romena Fraternity was founded in 1991.

Camaldoli Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

The Monastery (or Cenobio) is the place where the monks, while also experiencing solitude, experience fraternal life and communion. This dimension of existence is not experienced only among the members of the Community, but is also expressed in the welcome of guests: in the spaces of the Monastery and in those of the Guest House.

Gothic Line Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Magnificent trail. Suitable as an "enduro" type MTB route. For those approaching by bike, we recommend the climb along the German path up to the Gaggi cross and then turn right at the top onto the first path that climbs up to Poggio Muschioso. From here the paths that can be traced back to the Gothic line branch off downhill (enduro!)
Wonderful landscape.
Not suitable for Gravel

Path of the Germans! Just wonderful. Not feasible with Gravel.
Up to the point known as "la Rota", also feasible in Gravel although quite adventurous......
Afterwards, however, it is not recommended.
