The Dahlhausen Railway Bridge is a former railway bridge that crosses the Ruhr between Bochum-Dahlhausen and Essen-Burgaltendorf. It is located near the former freight yard of Dahlhausen train station with today's Dahlhausen Railway Museum. A single-track bridge was opened at this point in 1874 for the Essen-Überruhr-Hagen-Vorhalle railway line of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft from Überruhr to Burgaltendorf to Altendorf (Ruhr) station and on to Dahlhausen. It was expanded to two tracks in 1927. The bridge was destroyed in the Second World War. In 1951 a track was restored. The bridge is no longer used by the railway today. The rails were removed in 1991.
The steel bridge for cyclists and pedestrians located next to it was built in 1988 on the foundations of the second track.

Dahlhausen Pontoon Bridge

Highlight (Segment) • Bridge

The floating bridge Dahlhausen is a pedestrian and road bridge over the Ruhr at the city boundary between Bochum and Hattingen. Its northeastern half lies in the Bochum district Dahlhausen, her southwestern half in the Hattinger district Dumberg. The road leading across the bridge connects Bochum via Hattinger Stadtgebiet with Essen's Burgaltendorf district and, via a branch, with the Hattinger villages of Dumberg and Niederwenigern. A first pontoon bridge at this location was opened in the spring of 1899. Previously, a ferry took over the transport of wagons and persons. The bridge was heavily damaged in the Second World War on 18 May 1943 (bombing of Möhnetalsperre) and only temporarily rebuilt. In 1959 they were finally replaced by the current bridge about 50 meters downriver.

Ruhr weir and towpath in Hattingen

Highlight (Segment) • River

The towpath in Hattingen is a beautiful, flat route and offers various stopping points with places to sit. It is also very suitable for (smaller) children. For a longer tour, it is the connection to the Baldeneysee in the south of Essen or to the Kemnader See in Bochum.

Ruhr Waterfalls at Hattingen

Highlight • Waterfall

It's worth getting off your bike here and listening to the rushing of the Ruhr for a while. Two small but wide steps ensure that the water of the Ruhr falls from one basin to the next at this point. The waterfalls offer a beautiful backdrop for a short rest.
