This 11.3-mile (18.2 km) loop packs in a significant 1701 feet (518 metres) of elevation gain, taking about 1 hour and 51 minutes to complete. It's definitely one of the more popular routes for those with very good fitness, offering a substantial workout with a big payoff.

What to expect on Middle Dan's Trail – Dimple Hill loop from Timberhill Natural Area

Expect a diverse ride as you navigate this loop. You'll encounter a mix of paved sections, gravel forest roads, and even some singletrack, so a hybrid or mountain bike with robust tires is a must. The Middle Dan's section offers rolling hills and stream crossings, leading into the challenging ascent towards Dimple Hill. Be prepared for sections that can be loose underfoot, and wooden bridges might be slippery after rain. The reward for your effort is the panoramic views from the summit of Dimple Hill, stretching across Corvallis, the Willamette Valley, and even distant peaks like Mt. Hood on a clear day. This route is best for experienced cyclists comfortable with varied terrain and significant climbs.

Planning your visit

The Timberhill Natural Area serves as a great starting point for this loop. This multi-use trail system is open year-round, but be aware that sections of Upper Dan's Trail can become sloppy to ride in winter due to wet, decomposing organic material. Always exercise caution on downhill speeds and yield to other users, as the trail is shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and equestrians. Parking is available at Timberhill Natural Area, but it's always wise to arrive early on busy days.
