Description
If you're looking for a serious challenge with big rewards, the Maple Springs gate loop from Black Star Canyon is one of Orange County's most demanding gravel biking routes. This difficult 29.2-mile (47.0 km) loop packs in 3898 feet (1188 metres) of elevation gain, taking roughly 3 hours and 59 minutes to complete, making it a perfect pick for experienced riders ready to earn their panoramic views.
What to expect on Maple Springs gate loop from Black Star Canyon
The ride starts with a wide, level fire road through Black Star Canyon, but don't let that fool you; the real work begins with an 8-mile climb to Beeks Place, gaining 1900 feet, and then another half-mile to the Doppler radar tower with a 10.1% grade. You'll traverse chaparral canyons, high desert, and forests of oak and conifer, with views of the Trabuco Creek area. From higher elevations, the Santa Ana Mountains unfold, and on clear days, you can spot Mount San Jacinto, San Gorgonio, and Mount Baldy. This route is for fit gravel bikers who don't mind loose, rocky sections and significant climbs, especially given the exposed sections with little shade.
Planning your visit
Before you go, be aware that an Adventure Pass is required for access in some areas of Cleveland National Forest. The trail is largely exposed, so summer rides can be very hot; consider an early start or cooler seasons. Cell service can be unreliable, so download your maps. Parking for Maple Springs gate loop Black Star Canyon is available at the trailhead, which is often a wide, level fire road for the initial two miles.
