St. Lorenz Church, Travemünde

Highlight • Religious Site

St. Lorenz Church, Travemünde

This imposing, old church has stood here for over 450 years.

The Protestant church was built on the foundations of the previous church, which burned down at the beginning of the 16th century. Its remains can still be seen on the north and east sides of the chancel.

The nave is adorned with the Baroque altar from 1723, carved by the Lübeck master Hieronymus Jakob Hassenberg. The beautifully painted coffered ceiling is also worth seeing. Old gravestones are embedded in the floor;

the oldest dates back to 1404.

The bronze figure of Otto Timmermann, a Travemünde character, holds a book, while two children sit on the fountain's edge, listening to his stories. The fountain, located in front of the old blacksmith's shop—now the parish hall of St. Lorenz Church—represents a horse trough. Otto Timmermann (who died on April 24, 2008) served as the church sexton here until 1978.

The beautiful half-timbered house was presumably built in the 2nd half of the 16th century. It is one of the oldest residential buildings in Travemünde. The gable protrudes on profiled consoles and the panels are enlivened by infill brick patterns.

The crossing on the Priwall ferry with the option of taking your bike with you allows for lovely tours on both sides of the Trave. And the car ferry runs all night long between Travemünde and Priwall! Good to know in case the tour turns out to be a bit longer than planned. ;)

The views during the crossing itself are always beautiful too.
