Remains of Schwabach's city wall

Highlight • Historical Site

In the Südliche Mauerstraße you come across the remains of the Schwabach city wall.
The city wall was probably built in 1365 over a period of 50 years. It was made of hewn stone, was almost seven meters high and had a covered parapet and portcullis at the river crossings. There were a total of four culverts in the Schwabach town wall. The Hördlertor, the Mönchstor, the Nürnberger Tor and the Zöllnertor. The moat was in front of the wall until the 18th century. This was leveled in 1744 and built over with gardens. The city walls, however, lasted until the second half of the 19th century. In 1872 the magistrate commissioned the demolition of the city walls. Another breakthrough came in 1873 with the “Neutor”. The mighty Nuremberg Gate fell as the last gate in 1893 and the towers at the Schwabach influence in 1897. (Source: schwabach.de)

Schwabach Market Square

Highlight • Settlement

The market place with the beautiful ensemble of houses, with the town hall/church tower and the beautiful fountain make a great photo motif. The markets and festivals of the city of Schwabach take place here and the greengrocer is also here on weekdays. There is a second, smaller fountain on the market square, the horse fountain. This is decorated every year for the Easter fountain.

A little more history?!

The Königsplatz (market square) has been the center of Schwabach since the town became a market (approx. 1303) and has remained so to this day. Only the wealthiest and most influential citizens of the city, with their sometimes magnificent estates, lived here. In the east, the rectangular square is bounded by the town hall and the tower of the town church that protrudes behind it.
This ensemble is a formative motif for the city and is depicted most frequently.
Until 1885, Königsplatz was simply called Marktplatz. Only then was it renamed in honor of the Bavarian royal family.

Village fountain in Gustenfelden

Highlight • Monument

Small, natural village with many farms. The specialty is the direct marketing of many farms! The Schwabach is crossed over a small bridge and in the middle of the village there is a wonderfully prepared fountain. Another, more inconspicuous fountain is by the church (no drinking water - but still suitable as an emergency nail in hot summers)
