Saint Hubertus Hunting Chapel

Highlight • Religious Site

Hunting chapel dedicated to Saint Hubertus

On the way to the Kemater Alm, hikers pass two wooden chapels. Unfortunately, whoever built them is no longer known, they have always been there. Assumptions are made about the WHY. There are a great many in this valley — miners. They are mowed once a year, always in August. Almost every Grinzner farmer has such a meadow. In our motorized age, that doesn't mean a big problem. In the past, however, field workers had to put up with a walk of up to four kilometers. The chapels were probably built to linger and relax.

Halfway to the Kemater Alm you come across the second chapel which is looked after by the hunting club Grinzens. The picture on the front wall shows Saint Hubertus.

The Hubertus legend has been told since the Middle Ages, according to which he was converted while hunting by a magnificent stag with a crucifix between his antlers. That is why Hubertus is considered the patron saint of hunting. He is also the patron of nature and the environment.

Alpine roses, gentians and mountain pines are used by sheep breeders and hunters as floral decorations. The oil paintings in the two chapels are each one meter by one meter and were created by the Axamer painter Bernhard Falkner.
