Swallow's Nest Castle (1230) was daringly built on a rock on the steep mountain slope above the Neckar River.
The four castles, and especially Swallow's Nest, have inspired many legends and stories. Victor Hugo invented the story of the robber baron "Bligger the Scourge," who had his seat at the castle, and Mark Twain also mentions it in his "A Tramp Through Europe."
The well-preserved ruins are freely accessible, and the walkable battlements on the two-winged shield wall offer a magnificent view.

There are always great views along the way

Rarely does one have the opportunity to visit four castles in such a small space. Whether a short walk or as part of a larger hike, the Four Castle Trail is definitely worth a visit.

Vorderburg and Mittelburg are both privately owned are not accessible.
The Vorderburg is fenced wide and you get really only the keep from the distance to face. At the Mittelburg run the public paths along the outer walls and you also get a good impression of the beautifully preserved grounds from the outside.

The two ruins Hinterburg and Schwalbennest are freely accessible and offer great views in Neackartal.

Bürstein Hut

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Ruhesteinhütte is a simple hut with benches on the inner walls.
There is no barbecue or other seating outside, so the hut is more suitable for a small rest e.g. on a lap around the Schadeck.
And should you ever be surprised by a heavy rain shower, a roof over your head is worth gold;)

Before the big rush on the hiking trails arrived, we hiked two of the four castles in pleasant temperatures and, thanks to @Pu Muckl's tip, also visited the Rothsnasenhütte with its magnificent view.
Truly beautiful up there.
