This lake is particularly distinguished by its abundance of bays. Almost the entire western area from the lakeshore to the railway tracks on the Preetz-Ascheberg line is designated as a nature reserve "Peninsulas and Bays in Lake Lanker".

Lake Lanker is 323.6 hectares in size, up to 21 m deep and lies about 19 m above sea level. It is divided into a larger northern part and a smaller southern part, which are connected by a little more than 1 m deep stream. Without islands, the length of its shoreline is 17 km. Lake Lanker is located in the municipalities of Preetz, Kühren, Wahlstorf and Schellhorn.
