Description
If you're looking for an easy, high-payoff coastal walk in Connecticut, the Hiking loop from Niantic delivers. This is an easy 2.3-mile (3.7 km) hiking route with a negligible 4 feet (1 meter) of elevation gain, taking about 55 minutes to complete. It's perfect for a casual stroll, offering stunning ocean views without breaking a sweat.
What to expect on Hiking loop from Niantic
This route primarily follows the Niantic Bay Boardwalk, a mostly flat path that offers continuous scenic views of the Long Island Sound and Niantic Bay Beach. You'll walk on a mix of boardwalk and gravel or crushed stone, passing through a native dune ecosystem. About halfway along, the shore transitions from sandy beach to rocky coastline, adding a subtle change to the scenery. This accessible trail is suitable for all skill levels and is particularly rewarding at sunset when the ocean views are at their most vibrant.
Planning your visit
The Niantic Bay Boardwalk is fully accessible and open 24/7, with no fees required. You'll find amenities like restrooms, outdoor showers, and picnic areas at Cini Memorial Park at one end, and similar facilities at Hole-in-the-Wall Beach at the other. Be aware that pets, bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters, tobacco products, and alcohol are generally not permitted on the boardwalk itself. For the most spectacular experience, plan your visit around sunset.
