Jones Beach State Park

Highlight • Beach

Jones Beach at Jones Beach State Park is home to 6.5 miles of beautiful white-sand beach on the Atlantic Ocean on the south shore of Long Island. Although many of the 8 million visitors per year enjoy swimming, beach-walking, and sunbathing, there is so much more to do here. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy bird watching, spotting species such as Oystercatchers, Terns, and Northern Harrier Hawks along the shore. The park's boardwalk and bike paths provide a scenic route for cyclists, with connections extending to nearby parks. Water sports, including surfing, stand-up paddle-boarding, wind surfing, and kayaking, are popular activities along the beachfront. Fishing and crabbing are also available, particularly at Field 10, where there is a bait and tackle shop on site. For those with mobility impairments, Beach Wheel Chairs are available at Zach's Bay for easy access across the sand and into the water. Special events such as the Bethpage Air Show, July 4th Fireworks Spectacular, and concerts at the Northwell Health Theatre offer fun experiences for visitors all year.

What to expect on Jones Beach State Park – Jones Beach Bike Path loop from Jones Beach Island

Expect continuous waterfront views as you pedal along the predominantly flat, well-paved surfaces. You'll be treated to vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the tranquil bays of Long Island, passing sandy beaches and the distinctive Art Deco architecture of Jones Beach State Park. While the terrain is easy, be prepared for potential strong winds, which are common on the barrier island and can create challenging headwinds. The path also crosses scenic bridges over Seamans Creek and Goose Creek, offering diverse perspectives. This route is ideal for cyclists of all fitness levels who appreciate coastal beauty, though you'll need to be mindful of pedestrians, especially on boardwalk sections.

Planning your visit

Planning your ride on the Jones Beach Bike Path is straightforward, but be aware that despite the name, the extensive main pathway is primarily an out-and-back route, not a continuous loop for its entire length. Parking is available at Jones Beach, though a fee may apply during peak season. You'll find convenient amenities like restrooms, beach access, and even restaurants at various points along the way, including Jones Beach, Tobay Beach, and Gilgo Beach. The best time of year to cycle is generally outside of peak summer weekends to avoid crowds, though the path is accessible year-round.
