Description
If you're looking for a diverse and rewarding gravel biking experience just south of Boston, the Ponkapoag Bog Boardwalk – Houghton's Pond loop from Houghton's Pond delivers. This easy 10.1 miles (16.3 km) gravel biking route, with a gentle 320 feet (98 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 1 hours and 12 minutes, making it a perfect choice for a relaxed outing or a quick escape into nature.
What to expect on Ponkapoag Bog Boardwalk – Houghton's Pond loop from Houghton's Pond
The route offers a journey through varied landscapes. You'll start around Houghton's Pond, enjoying wide, smooth paths and picturesque views of its clear, spring-fed waters and peaceful woodlands. As you continue, the terrain shifts to packed dirt fire roads around Ponkapoag Pond. While generally easy, be prepared for some sections with rocks to weave around, especially on the broader "Ponky Loop" which this route is part of. A key feature, the Ponkapoag Bog Boardwalk, is a unique detour into a rare Atlantic white cedar bog, but remember: this narrow, weathered boardwalk is strictly for walking, not biking. It's a chance to dismount and explore a "subarctic" landscape with dense cedar stands and unique bog plants like pitcher plants and sundews.
Planning your visit
This loop is easily accessible from Boston, located within the extensive Blue Hills Reservation. Houghton's Pond offers convenient amenities including picnic areas, restrooms, and a concession stand. For the gravel biking sections, a minimum tire size of 32c or larger is suggested to comfortably handle the varied terrain. Remember that the Ponkapoag Bog Boardwalk itself is not suitable for bikes, so plan to walk this unique ecological feature. The autumn foliage around Houghton's Pond is particularly stunning, making it a great time to visit.
