Description
If you're looking for a substantial road cycling loop that blends scenic river views with charming rural landscapes, the Bridge of Dreams – Kokosing Gap Trailhead loop from Glenmont is definitely worth your time. This moderate 42.4-mile (68.2 km) route, with 1264 feet (385 metres) of elevation gain, offers a rewarding ride that takes approximately 2 hours and 58 minutes. It's an excellent choice for road cyclists seeking a varied terrain and elevation difficulty on a longer day out, connecting two iconic Ohio trails.
What to expect on Bridge of Dreams – Kokosing Gap Trailhead loop from Glenmont
This route takes you through a journey of changing surfaces and scenery. Starting from Glenmont, you'll first encounter the Mohican Valley Trail, which features a mix of paved sections, packed gravel, dirt, and chip and seal surfaces. Expect some moderate grades and descents, particularly around "Baddow Pass." As you connect to the Kokosing Gap Trail, the surface generally smooths out to asphalt, offering a much flatter profile, though you'll still encounter a climb into Mount Vernon. The highlight is undoubtedly the Bridge of Dreams, a 370-foot covered bridge spanning the Mohican River, a truly unique landmark. Along the Kokosing Gap Trail, you'll wind through forests, wetlands, and agricultural fields, crossing the Kokosing River on historic railroad bridges and passing by a restored 1940 Alco locomotive and 1924 Chesapeake & Ohio caboose in Gambier. This ride suits cyclists comfortable with mixed surfaces and moderate distances.
Planning your visit
The Mohican Valley Trail is shared with horses and Amish buggies, so be mindful of other users and potential horse droppings. The Kokosing Gap Trail offers amenities like restrooms, water fountains, and bike repair stations at various points along its length, which is helpful for this longer ride. Given the duration, starting earlier in the day is advisable to allow ample time to enjoy the route and avoid any late afternoon rush. The trail is beautiful in spring, summer, and fall, with about 70% of the Kokosing Gap Trail shaded, offering some relief on warmer days.
