Belle Époque Houses of Mers-les-Bains

Highlight • Historical Site

The seaside district: after the construction of the railway at the end of the 19th century, which connects Mers-Les-Bains to Paris, exclusive tourism from Paris is booming. It was very fashionable at the time to take sea baths. Along the coast, the new seaside district displays all the characteristics of the Belle Époque. Wealthy Parisians and other aristocrats built their second homes there, generally in an Art Nouveau style characterized by metal, wood, or iron balconies and bay windows with rounded shapes, colorful facades, and exuberant ornamentation. The Franco-Dutch architect Eduard Johan Niermans (1859-1928), (born in Enschede, became a French national in 1895), designed several houses in the district between 1899 and 1907. The district still has about 300 villas from that era and was largely designated a remarkable heritage site in 1986. In late July and early August, the Bathers' Festival is celebrated there, with hundreds of people dressed in the fashion of the Belle Époque.

From the top of the small town on the cliffs, the view opens onto the plains along the beach to the north.

Until the 18th century, the Hâble d'Ault was a bay that served as a refuge during heavy storms. As the bay was increasingly closed off from the sea by stones falling from the cliffs of Ault and the Pays de Caux, forming a kind of dike, the area has turned into a lagoon with marshes. About 200 species of birds live here, including ducks, geese and waders. Part of the lagoon is protected and owned by the Conservatoire du Littoral, the other 62 hectares serve as a hunting reserve. In June and July, when sea kale, clover and wild thyme bloom, the Hâble is shrouded in bright purple and yellow colours.

Ault Coastal Panorama

Highlight • Viewpoint

Fantastic viewpoint, with orientation table and benches with spectacular perspective. Steep bike/pedestrian road, closed to cars as the cliffs are crumbling and the edge advances closer to the village.

Ault Chalk Cliffs

Highlight • Natural Monument

The village of Ault (ch'bourqu'éd'Eut, in Picard) has an exceptional geographical location. At the edge of the cliffs of the Normandy Alabaster Coast, with its valley protected by the Bois de Cise, a veritable green setting overlooking the English Channel, it is in Onival, with its sandy beach at low tide that begins, with the Côte d opal, the Hâble d'Ault and, indeed, the ancient Baie de Somme.

At the top of a steep hill and at the arrival of a funicular, the view is splendid there in good weather.
