View of the Shard

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Shard, also Shard London Bridge, symbolizes modern London with its facade. With a height of almost 310 meters, the skyscraper is one of the tallest buildings in Europe. The elevator moves at 6 meters/second in the direction of the viewing platforms, which extend over floors 68, 69. and 72. Admission to The View from The Shard is €30 (adults).

Hay's Galleria

Highlight • Monument

Look out for "The Navigators" inside the gallery. It was installed in 1987, when the wharf was convered into a shopping center. It's not only a sculpture but also a kinetic machine and fountain.

HMS Belfast — Museum ship

Highlight • Historical Site

A must-see museum ship, the ship was decommissioned in 1965 and then converted into a museum in 1971. The ship is part of the "Imperial War Museum" and is anchored on the Thames. The British warship was the Royal Navy's largest light cruiser during World War II.

Former London City Hall

Highlight • Historical Site

City Hall is the home of the London Assembly that works with the Mayor of London to run the city.

Disappointingly, although this strangely shaped building was reportedly designed to reduce its surface area and maximise energy efficiency, the use of glass means that the building is anything but efficient!

20 Fenchurch Street has been nicknamed "The Walkie-Talkie" because of its distinctive shape, said to resemble a two-way radio handset.

View of Tower Bridge

Highlight • Historical Site

Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, built between 1886 and 1894. The bridge consists of two towers, tied together at the upper level by two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal tension forces imposed by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The bridge deck is freely accessible to both vehicles and pedestrians, whereas the bridge's twin towers, high-level walkways and Victorian engine rooms form part of the Tower Bridge Exhibition, for which there's a small admission charge.

Fun fact: I have also paddled under this bridge whilst kayaking home for Christmas a few years ago, finishing up just after the bridge and soon after diving into the nearby The Dickens Inn historic pub, situated within the lovely St Katherine’s Harbour. Highly recommended!
