Description
The Maroon Bells Climb – Aspen loop from Aspen is one of those road cycling routes that truly earns its reputation: a moderate 29.9-mile (48.1 km) journey with 2211 feet (674 metres) of climbing, typically completed in about 2 hours and 31 minutes. This ride is perfect if you're looking for a challenging yet incredibly rewarding ascent through some of Colorado's most iconic scenery, culminating at the famously photographed Maroon Bells.
What to expect on Maroon Bells Climb – Aspen loop from Aspen
As you pedal along Maroon Creek Road, you'll experience a steady, sustained uphill climb through beautiful aspen groves and glacial valleys, with rugged peaks like 14,026-foot Pyramid Peak watching over you. The gradient is constant, mostly between 4-5%, rarely exceeding 7.5%, making it doable for most in decent shape, though the last few miles are the steepest. The scenery is consistently stunning, building anticipation until you reach Maroon Lake, where the two distinct, wine-colored Maroon Bells finally come into full, breathtaking view. This route is best suited for cyclists with good fitness who appreciate a paved, largely car-free environment and incredible mountain vistas.
Planning your visit
A major advantage for cyclists on this route is the limited vehicle traffic. During peak season, typically early June to early October, Maroon Creek Road is largely restricted to buses and vehicles with reservations between 8 AM and 5 PM, creating a much safer and more enjoyable cycling experience. You'll finish at a parking lot near Maroon Lake, where you can secure your bike and walk to the viewing areas. Consider an e-bike if you want to focus more on the views and less on the strenuous climb.
