Bastion of the Urban Walls

Highlight • Historical Site

The imposing fortification is a testimony of the sixteenth-century defensive interventions implemented by the Emperor Charles V to stem the Turkish invasions. The adaptation of the walls was entrusted to the architect Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, and in 1542 received a new push by the governator Don Ferrante Loffredo. The walls were therefore replaced by a fortification equipped with bulwarks capable of resisting at the attack of the new war weapons of the time. The defensive front was about 60 meters long and consisted of two floors: the upper one beyond the level of the moat, and the lower one, partially excavated in the rocky bank which today corresponds to the internal planking level.

San Biagio Gate

Highlight • Monument

It's one of the three access gates to the old town. Built on an older entrance of Charles V, it was rebuilt in 1774 by the governor Tommaso Ruffo, as recalled in the Latin inscription above. Pairs of smooth-stemmed columns rest on high bases that frame the archway, on which the coat of arms of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon and that of the city of Lecce are superimposed.

Piazza del Popolo, Muro Leccese

Highlight • Historical Site

The built-up area of Muro Leccese has very ancient origins dating back to the Bronze Age. The period of greatest expansion, however, is that of the Messapian era, as evidenced by various archaeological finds. A section of the walls linked to this era is still visible today. The entire village was then destroyed by the Romans in the third century BC and only in the Middle Ages did it again take on an important role in the region.

Menhir of San Paolo

Highlight • Monument

The Menhir of San Paolo is an ancient monolith located in the Giurdignano countryside, in the so-called "megalithic garden of Italy" where there are many other menhirs. It is particular because it is placed on a rock that contains a crypt with frescoes dedicated to St. Paul, and on the top of the menhir there are engraved crosses. It is thus testimony to the history and crossroads of cultures of this area of Puglia.

Nice road (when dry)

Highlight • Trail

This road is shown on the Komoot map as paved. However, the soil is made up of a type of clay, which is slippery in wet weather. So don't try to drive on sloping sides near puddles, because you will slip and fall into the raspberries.
